3 Feet From The Bar in 1976

Here’s a little bit of fun cocktail party trivia, inspired by my recent dinner at the lovely Silvermine Tavern in Norwalk, where there is a petite, wooden mannequin with a red cape positioned next to the bar.  You may actually see something similar in old inns and taverns throughout Fairfield County, and here’s why: up until as recently as 1976 –>> that’s right, as in disco days << — it was CT state law that women could not stand within 3 feet of a bar.  So that mannequin used to serve as the reminder.  STEPFORD, anyone????????

Okay, so this is what I’m pretty sure the bartender told me the year was … is there a lawyer in the house who can confirm that date?  It’s really kind o funbelievable to me!

Shop Rowayton’s Merchant of The Week

I am privileged to have been invited to support the Shop Rowayton campaign through this site, and do so with great enthusiasm, as the waterside Rowayton village shopping experience is an absolutely quintessential example of what makes Fairfield County such a special place to live.  ESPECIALLY in the summertime — I love nothing more than to slip down into Brendans 101 for an absolutely KILLER lobster salad sandwich and see little kids riding their bikes, with flags flying, barefoot and holding the handlebar with one hand while licking an ice cream cone with the other with their dads managing their direction by holding their bicycle seats … and meandering back down the sidewalks, browsing shop windows and enjoying the breeze from the water ….. but in order to continue to enjoy these special little shops and markets, we need to support them year round.  Even if you think you already know Rowayton, have a look behind the curtain and get to know these business owners through the Shop Rowayton campaign: they’d love to get to know you, too!

Start with this week’s featured merchant, Barbara Conroy, owner of the adorable, delicious and country-riverside-chic Rowayton Market …. read about her here!

Baby Supplies are closer than you think ….

I know it seems like I’ve got babies on the brain, but since I’m starting out this site as a kind of download of the things I’ve lived and learned about FFC at large, and I had a baby a year ago, these are the most recent items that come to mind.…!

So I was thrilled to discover that there is a Baby Depot in the basement of Burlington Coat Factory, in Samford, that is essentially a replica of Babies R Us — in Danbury or Yonkers — except smaller, and with not quite the variety of selection.  Sure, Target is a very convenient place to go for baby supplies as well, but the Baby Depot has more of that … well … first-time parent kind of appeal, I think.

They’ve got: the car seats, the playpens, the swings, the bouncy seats, the crib pads, the safety gates, the bottle warmers — even breast pumps.  And it’s a bigger selection of brands and options than at the Stamford Target.

For example, right when the whole BPA plastic bottle scare happened, I high-tailed it over to Target to pick up some non-BPA plastic bottles (figuring they might be cheaper there) and nobody there had even heard of the scare nor did they even have glass bottles as an alternative.  I went right across the street to the Baby Depot and was able to purchase a bunch of glass bottles at a definitely lower price than what I had seen online at specialty organic baby websites.

All I know is that, for the longest time while I was pregs, I was under the impression that I had to travel to Danbury (which is just a long drive for a really pregnant person who has to use the bathroom every 2 minutes) to get the official brands and items I needed.  So when I discovered Baby Depot, I was THRILLED and wanted to pass along the tip.
